依據本所申請理由與發展方向所述,本所設立之目標,乃在於協助國家面對當今全球化消耗性資本主義,所帶來「在地場所性」與「歸屬感」的流失的深沈問題,如何尋求對抗,以至能解決或減緩這個衝擊的研究與設計人才。另一個同樣重要的問題(可以說是一體的兩面)則是舊存留建物的去留,以及與新建物並存共生的實質問題。因為本土近40年來的急速建設,至使建築物的數量急速增加,而近15年來由於中國大陸及東南亞、巴西,甚至非洲某些國家的急起直追的競爭,衝擊台灣的經濟與外銷的增生力。就社會經濟及財物的實質面問題,以及舊有存留建物吸附之記憶、參與歸屬感的生成等面向的複雜作用,讓當前暨未來必然要面對舊建物修改建以及與新建物的交纏共生問題。目前國內外相關研究所在此領域之專業發展仍如鳳毛麟角,因此,本碩士班發展將與國內現有學術研究機構不同的專業研究發展與人才培育方向。

緣此,整體課程的設計與特色,主要著重引導學生面對在既有的真實基地存在舊建物的環境下,如何改造其舊有的空間,以及如何植入新建物,藉以創造出一種介於舊與新交纏的雙重豐富的可行性。由於在面臨舊與新建物交纏作用之中,必然要面對不同細部的接合暨構造適切性的問題,也引導出實質表現力的依附關係。故藉由歐洲專業學者與建築設計者的聘任參與,以期能培養研究生解決問題與實質設計實踐的差異觀點暨綜合能力。未來,也因為相關領域的國際專家學者與本所師生力量的注入與引導,期能使各界瞭解並體驗設計暨藝術的能量,促進國家文化創意產業的深耕發展。
